Corfu (Kerkyra in Greek) is the second largest Ionian island, lying off the northwestern coast of mainland Greece across a narrow channel from Albania. Unlike most Greek islands, it never fell under Ottoman rule - four centuries of Venetian governance (1386-1797) followed by short French and British periods left an architectural legacy of pastel buildings, arcaded streets, and forts.

The island stretches 64 km north to south, with mountainous terrain that traps moisture and produces the lush green landscape that distinguishes the Ionian islands from the arid Cyclades. Corfu International Airport Ioannis Kapodistrias (CFU) sits 3 km south of the Old Town, and ferries from Igoumenitsa and Italy dock at the New Port. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
