Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and the third vertex of India's Golden Triangle tourist circuit alongside Delhi and Agra. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, it was one of the earliest planned cities in India, laid out on a grid pattern inspired by Vastu Shastra principles. The city earned its nickname 'the Pink City' after Maharaja Ram Singh had the entire old town painted terracotta-pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales.
Today Jaipur is a city of roughly 4 million people where Mughal and Rajput architecture coexists with modern shopping malls and craft bazaars. The old walled city still hums with activity - merchants sell block-printed textiles, gemstones, and blue pottery from narrow shopfronts, while auto-rickshaws weave between sacred cows on wide boulevards. Outside the walls, the hilltop Amber Fort and the water-surrounded Jal Mahal offer some of Rajasthan's most photographed scenes.
Getting to Jaipur is straightforward. Jaipur International Airport (JAI) connects to Delhi, Mumbai, and several Gulf hubs. The Delhi-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express covers the 280 km distance in under two hours. Within the city, auto-rickshaws, Ola, and Uber are the standard way to move between sights. The best months to visit are October through February, when daytime temperatures sit around 22-27 degrees Celsius - far more comfortable than the 40-plus degree heat of April through June.
