Today Nicosia is a working capital rather than a resort town, which means visitors who make the trip inland from the coast discover an authentic city with far fewer tourists.
The old city within the Venetian Walls is where most of the interest lies - a compact circular area roughly 1.5 km across, with museums, medieval churches, Ottoman hans, and a pedestrian crossing point into the Turkish Cypriot north. Beyond the walls, modern Nicosia is a mix of commercial districts, university campuses, and residential neighbourhoods that show a side of Cyprus most beach-bound visitors never see.

The best time to visit Nicosia is March to May or October to November. Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable temperatures (16-28°C) for walking the old city. Summers are brutally hot inland (regularly exceeding 40°C), making outdoor sightseeing unpleasant between June and September. Autumn is warm and dry with fewer visitors. Winter is mild but the shortest days limit sightseeing hours.
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is about 50 km southeast of Nicosia. Intercity buses (Kapnos Airport Shuttle) run regularly to Nicosia's central bus station and cost EUR 4-9 depending on the service (45-60 minutes). Taxis cost EUR 40-50 and take about 40 minutes. There is no rail service in Cyprus. Car rental is available at the airport and useful for exploring the wider island.
Walking is the best way to explore the old city within the Venetian Walls - everything is within a 15-minute walk. The walled city is roughly circular and compact enough to cover on foot in a day. For the wider city, OSEL public buses operate routes from Solomos Square (EUR 1.50 per ride). Taxis are widely available but metered fares add up. Renting a car is practical for day trips to the Troodos Mountains or coast.
One full day covers the main sights on both sides of the Green Line. Two days allows a more relaxed pace with time for museums and the modern city. Nicosia works well as a day trip from Larnaca or Limassol, but an overnight stay lets you experience the evening dining scene on Ledra Street and the backstreets of Laiki Geitonia.
Nicosia is very safe for tourists on both sides of the divide. Cyprus has one of the lowest crime rates in the EU. The Green Line crossing at Ledra Street is straightforward - just bring your passport. You can walk freely between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides during the day. The buffer zone itself is a UN-monitored area and entry is not permitted outside designated crossing points.
