Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) is 14 km southwest of the city. The Aerobus (A1/A2) runs every 5-10 minutes to Placa de Catalunya in 35-40 minutes (~€6.75). Metro Line L9 Sud connects both terminals to Zona Universitaria (~30 min, ~€5.15). RENFE R2 Nord commuter train runs from T2 to Barcelona Sants in ~19 minutes (~€4.60). Taxis cost ~€35-45 with a fixed rate.
The metro (TMB) has 12 lines covering all major areas. The T-Casual 10-trip card (~€11.35) works on metro, bus, tram, and FGC suburban rail - best value for visitors. The city centre is very walkable: Las Ramblas to Barceloneta beach is ~25 minutes, Gothic Quarter to El Born ~10 minutes. Night buses (Nitbus) run from midnight to 5am.
Eixample is the 19th-century grid district with Sagrada Familia and Passeig de Gracia. The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic) is the medieval heart with the Cathedral and Placa Reial. El Born has Santa Maria del Mar and boutiques. Barceloneta is the seafront beach neighbourhood. Gracia is a bohemian barrio north of Eixample. Montjuic offers hilltop views, MNAC, and the Magic Fountain. Poblenou is the emerging tech and creative district.
Barcelona Sants (Estacio de Sants) is the main railway hub. High-speed AVE trains connect Barcelona with Madrid (2h 30min), Valencia (3h 10min), and Zaragoza (1h 45min). Passeig de Gracia station also serves as a central stop. Book via Renfe (renfe.com). International services connect to southern France via Perpignan (~1h by high-speed train).
Montserrat (60 km, ~1h 15min by train + rack railway) offers a Benedictine monastery and dramatic mountain scenery. Sitges (35 km, ~40min by RENFE) is a charming coastal town with beaches. Girona (100 km, ~38min by AVE) has a medieval Jewish quarter and colourful riverside houses. Tarragona (100 km, ~1h) features Roman ruins and UNESCO heritage. The Costa Brava coast (1.5-2h by car) has rocky coves and medieval villages.
