Tenerife is the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, sitting roughly 300 km off the northwest coast of Africa. The island splits naturally into two climate zones. The south is dry, sunny, and resort-lined - expect 300+ days of sunshine a year around Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. The north is greener, cooler, and more rugged, with banana plantations, laurel forests in the Anaga mountains, and the historic university town of La Laguna. This contrast means you can sunbathe in the morning and hike through cloud forest by afternoon.
Tenerife South Airport (TFS) handles most international charter and low-cost flights, while Tenerife North Airport (TFN) serves inter-island and some mainland Spanish routes. TITSA buses connect both airports to the main resort areas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. A hire car remains the most practical way to explore the north coast, Anaga, and mountain villages like Masca - roads are well-maintained but winding.

Tenerife is a year-round destination thanks to its subtropical climate, but the best months for most visitors are April to June and September to October. These shoulder seasons offer warm temperatures (22-26 C), fewer crowds than winter peak season, and lower hotel prices. Winter (December to February) brings the most tourists - mainly Northern Europeans escaping the cold - and temperatures still hover around 18-21 C. Summer (July to August) is hottest in the south (up to 29 C) but can feel oppressive during calima dust episodes when Saharan air blows in.
Tenerife has two airports. Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is closest to the main resort areas - TITSA bus line 111 runs to Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas (around EUR 3.50, 20-30 min), and taxis cost EUR 25-40 depending on the resort. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) serves Santa Cruz and La Laguna - bus line 102 reaches Santa Cruz in about 20 minutes (EUR 2.50), and a taxi runs EUR 15-20. Pre-booked shared shuttles are also widely available from both airports.
It depends on how you plan to spend your time. If you are staying in a southern resort and mainly want beaches and waterparks, TITSA buses and taxis are sufficient. However, a hire car is strongly recommended if you want to explore the north coast, drive up to Teide National Park, visit Masca village, or reach Anaga Rural Park. Rental prices start from around EUR 20-25 per day. Roads are well-maintained but mountain routes (especially TF-436 to Masca) are narrow and winding.
Five to seven days is ideal to see Tenerife's highlights without rushing. Two days cover the south coast resorts and Siam Park. One full day is needed for Teide National Park (including the cable car and optional summit hike). Another day for the north - La Laguna, Anaga Rural Park, and Playa de las Teresitas. Add a day for the west coast (Masca, Los Gigantes, Garachico). With three days you can hit the essentials, but you will be moving fast.
Tenerife is generally very safe for tourists. Violent crime is rare, and the main risks are petty theft (pickpocketing in busy resort areas and markets) and sunburn. Use common sense with valuables, especially on crowded beaches and in nightlife areas around Playa de las Americas. Mountain hiking requires proper preparation - weather on Teide can change rapidly, and the Masca gorge trail requires a permit and reasonable fitness. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches, as Atlantic currents can be strong on the north coast.
