Cádiz Travel Facts
Cádiz is one of Western Europe's oldest cities, a salt-washed port set on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic in Andalusia's Costa de la Luz. Founded by the Phoenicians over three thousand years ago, it wears its history lightly — a compact old town of golden sandstone, sea-facing ramparts, and buzzing plazas surrounded by water on almost every side.
The historic centre packs in the gold-domed cathedral, watchtowers, and lively squares, while urban beaches like La Caleta and the long stretch of La Victoria sit within walking distance. The city is famous for its exuberant February carnival, its fried-fish taverns, and its role as a gateway to the sherry towns and white villages of the province.
Cádiz is walkable, sunny, and refreshingly unpolished compared with Andalusia's bigger tourist hubs. Atlantic breezes keep summers cooler than inland Seville, and the winter carnival is the year's liveliest moment.

Cádiz Destination FAQ
The best time to visit Cádiz is from April to October, when the Costa de la Luz enjoys warm, sunny weather. Summer is hot and lively, with locals and Spanish holidaymakers filling the beaches, while spring and autumn are milder and less crowded. February brings the famous Carnival of Cádiz, one of Spain's biggest and most colourful street parties. The Atlantic breeze keeps the city a little cooler than inland Andalusia.
Cádiz has no airport of its own; the closest is Jerez Airport (XRY), about 45 km north. The easiest connection is the C-1 cercanías train from Jerez to Cádiz, taking around 40 to 50 minutes. Seville Airport (SVQ), around 120 km away with more international flights, is linked to Cádiz by direct trains and buses in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.
The old town of Cádiz is compact, flat, and made for walking, with narrow lanes opening onto squares, the cathedral, and seafront ramparts. Local buses cover the newer parts of the city and the long La Victoria beach, and the train station connects the region. A car is unnecessary and often awkward in the historic centre, though it helps for exploring the white villages and beaches of the wider province.
Two days is enough to enjoy the heart of Cádiz, wandering the Old Town's plazas, climbing the Tavira Tower, visiting the golden cathedral, and relaxing on La Caleta and La Victoria beaches. With more time, the city makes a good base for day trips to the sherry town of Jerez, the white villages of the sierra, and the beaches and Roman ruins of the Costa de la Luz.
Cádiz is one of Spain's safer and more laid-back cities, and most visits are entirely trouble-free. Petty theft such as pickpocketing is the main thing to watch for, mainly in crowded areas, on the beaches in summer, and during the packed Carnival celebrations. Keep valuables secure and belongings in sight on the sand, and normal city precautions are generally all you need.
Cádiz is famous for its Carnival, held in February, when the whole city fills with satirical singing groups called chirigotas, elaborate costumes, and days of street parties. If you visit at other times, the beaches are the draw: intimate La Caleta framed by two castles in the old town, and the long, sandy La Victoria stretching along the newer part of the city. Both are lively and easy to reach on foot or by bus.
