The best time to visit Ibiza is May to early June or mid-September to October. These shoulder months give you 22-26 C days, warm sea temperatures, open clubs, and a fraction of the August crowds. July and August are peak season - hotel rates double, beaches fill before noon, and clubs run nightly until October's Closing Parties. Winter (November-April) is quiet, with most clubs and beach restaurants closed, but still pleasant for hiking and exploring Dalt Vila.
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) sits about 7 km southwest of Ibiza Town and the easiest options are taxi or bus. A licensed taxi from the airport rank costs roughly EUR 15-20 and takes 10-15 minutes to Ibiza Town, EUR 25-30 to Sant Antoni, and EUR 35-45 to the northern villages. Bus Line L10 runs to Ibiza Town every 20-30 minutes (EUR 3.50, ~25 min) and Line L9 connects to Sant Antoni. Pre-booked private transfers and shuttle buses to specific hotels are widely available.
A rental car is highly recommended if you want to explore beyond your resort. Public buses (TIB) connect the major towns and main beaches, but service to remote coves like Cala Salada, Cala d'Hort, or northern beaches is limited or non-existent. Renting a small car costs roughly EUR 30-50 per day in shoulder season and EUR 60-100 in August - book months ahead for summer. Scooters are popular but parking near beaches in peak season is competitive. If you plan to stay in Ibiza Town or Sant Antoni and only visit the most popular beaches, a car is optional.
Plan a minimum of 4 full days to see Ibiza properly. That gives you a day for Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town, a day for the western beaches and Es Vedra sunset, a day for the northern coves and Santa Gertrudis, and a day-trip to Formentera. A week (5-7 days) is the sweet spot - it adds time for nightlife, a boat charter, hippy markets, and quieter beaches like Cala Xarraca and Aigues Blanques. Shorter 2-3 day trips work for clubbing-focused visits but skip most of the island's quieter beauty.
Ibiza is one of the safer destinations in Europe, with violent crime rare and tourist police visible in summer. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowded clubs, bars, and the harbour area of Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni's West End at night. Use hotel safes, watch your phone in clubs, and never leave bags unattended on beaches. Drink-spiking is uncommon but possible - keep your drink in sight. Drug touts in club districts should be ignored: Spanish penalties for possession are serious. Roads are good but coastal mountain bends near Es Vedra and Cala d'Hort require caution after dark.
Ibiza has four main lodging zones, each with a distinct character. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) and the marina suit travellers who want walkable restaurants, Dalt Vila on their doorstep, and quick taxi access to clubs like Pacha and Hi. Playa d'en Bossa is the clubbing strip - Ushuaia, Hi, and beach clubs all within walking distance. Sant Antoni on the west coast is famous for its sunset bars, the West End nightlife, and proximity to ferry routes. The north (Sant Joan, Portinatx, Es Cana) suits couples and families wanting quiet pine-fringed coves and the Las Dalias hippy market. Santa Eulalia offers a balance - calm beaches, family resorts, and a short drive to both extremes.
Formentera is the unmissable day trip - 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza Town to La Savina, then bicycle or scooter to white-sand beaches at Ses Illetes and Migjorn. Round-trip ferry tickets cost roughly EUR 35-55 depending on the operator and season; book a day ahead in summer. A boat charter to the islets of Es Vedra and Es Vedranell, or to the secluded coves of the south coast, makes a memorable half-day. The interior offers shorter inland excursions - Santa Gertrudis village, the wineries of Sant Mateu, and the Las Dalias market in San Carlos every Saturday.
