San Sebastián Travel Facts
San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) is an elegant seaside city on Spain's northern coast, wrapped around the shell-shaped Bay of La Concha in the Basque Country. Famed for its belle-époque architecture, golden beaches, and a food culture that ranks among the best in the world, it draws visitors for pintxos bars, Michelin-starred restaurants, and a relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere.
The city divides into the lively Parte Vieja (Old Town), the grand 19th-century Centro, and the surf-friendly Gros district across the Urumea river. Beyond the beaches of La Concha and Zurriola, Monte Igueldo and Monte Urgull offer sweeping viewpoints, while day trips reach the fishing towns and vineyards of the surrounding Gipuzkoa province.
San Sebastián is compact and walkable, with a mild, wet Atlantic climate that keeps it green year-round. It's busiest in summer and during its September film festival, but the pintxos crawl through the Old Town is a year-round pleasure.

San Sebastián Destination FAQ
The best time to visit San Sebastián is from June to September, when the weather is warmest and the beaches are at their best. July and August are peak season, with lively crowds, festivals, and the busiest La Concha beach, while June and September offer pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors. Late September brings the famous San Sebastián Film Festival. The city sits in green, rainy Basque Country, so pack for occasional showers even in summer.
San Sebastián Airport (EAS) sits about 20 km east of the city in Hondarribia, near the French border. From there, Lurraldebus buses and taxis reach the city centre in roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Many visitors instead fly into Bilbao Airport (BIO), about 100 km away, and take a direct PESA bus that takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, or into Biarritz in France, about 45 km northeast.
San Sebastián is compact and very walkable, so you rarely need a car in the city. The Old Town, La Concha beach, and the main pintxos bars are all within easy strolling distance, and the flat centre is great for walking or cycling. Dbus city buses cover the wider area and hills like Monte Igueldo, and the Mugi transport card reduces fares. A car is only really useful for exploring the wider Basque coast and countryside.
Two to three days is ideal for San Sebastián. That gives you time to explore the Old Town's pintxos bars, relax on La Concha and Zurriola beaches, ride up Monte Igueldo, and wander the elegant Centro district. With a third or fourth day you can take day trips to Bilbao and the Guggenheim, the fishing town of Getaria, or across the border to Biarritz in France.
San Sebastián is a very safe city for tourists, with low crime rates even by Spanish standards. The main thing to watch for is petty theft such as pickpocketing in crowded areas like the Old Town, busy pintxos bars, and the beaches in high season. Keep an eye on belongings and valuables on the sand, and normal precautions are usually all that is needed both day and night.
San Sebastián is one of the world's great food cities, famous for pintxos, the Basque bar snacks lined up along counters in the Old Town. The tradition is to bar-hop, ordering one or two pintxos and a small drink such as txakoli wine or cider at each stop. The area also holds a remarkable cluster of Michelin-starred restaurants, so book well ahead if you want to dine at the top tables.
