Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of its seven emirates by area. Set on a flat island in the Arabian Gulf, the city is calmer and more spread out than its neighbour Dubai, with wide boulevards, long Corniche promenades, and a strong cultural focus.

Highlights include the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, the Emirates Palace, and Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World on Yas Island. The Empty Quarter desert and the Liwa Oasis sit about three hours' drive south, while Dubai is around 90 minutes by road for an easy day trip or twin-city stay.

Abu Dhabi Destination FAQ

November to March is the comfortable, dry season - sunny days, cool evenings, and ideal beach and desert weather. April and October are warm but still bearable. June to September brings extreme heat above 40 C, balanced by hotel deals and indoor attractions.

Zayed International Airport (AUH) is about 30 km from downtown. Metered taxis cost around AED 75-100 and take 25-30 minutes. The A1 public bus goes to the city for just AED 4. Most hotels also offer paid shuttles or limousine pickup.

Taxis are cheap, metered, and the most popular option for visitors. Uber and Careem ride-hailing also work well. Public buses use the Hafilat card; a hop-on hop-off Big Bus is the easiest way to see the main sights in a day. Walking is limited because of the heat.

Two to three full days covers Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Corniche, Yas Island theme parks, and a desert safari. Many travellers add Abu Dhabi to a Dubai trip - the two cities are only 90 minutes apart by road.

Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world, with very low crime and visible policing. Dress modestly at religious sites - shoulders and knees covered, and women should bring a scarf for mosques. Public alcohol consumption and intoxication outside licensed venues can lead to fines.
