Cairns Travel Facts
Cairns is a small tropical city in Far North Queensland and the main launch point for two UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the world's oldest tropical rainforest. The Esplanade, with its saltwater lagoon, runs along the city's mangrove-fringed waterfront.
Most visitors come for the water and the rainforest: day boats and liveaboards to the outer reef from Cairns Marina, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail through the rainforest, the Atherton Tablelands for waterfalls and dairy, and onward routes north to Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge, and Cape Tribulation.

Cairns Destination FAQ
May to October is dry season - warm sunny days, calm seas, and the best diving conditions on the Great Barrier Reef. November to April is wet season with hot humid days, frequent storms, and stinger nets in the water. June and July see whale migration and minke shark season.
Cairns Airport (CNS) is just 7 km north of the CBD. Sun Palm shuttles cost around AUD 15 and serve hotels directly. Taxis and Uber cost AUD 25-35 and take 10-15 minutes. Many tour operators also offer pickup from the airport directly to Port Douglas or Palm Cove.
The Cairns Esplanade and CBD are walkable. Translink buses with a go card cover the city and suburbs. Renting a car is the easiest way to reach the Atherton Tablelands, Cape Tribulation, or Port Douglas. Reef and rainforest tours are usually booked through operators with hotel pickup.
Four to five days lets you do a full-day reef trip, a day in the Daintree or Cape Tribulation, the Kuranda Skyrail or Scenic Railway, and a relaxed day on the Esplanade or at Palm Cove. With a week you can also stay overnight in Port Douglas or on the reef itself.
Cairns is generally safe with standard precautions in nightlife areas. The bigger risks are natural - crocodiles in mangrove and river areas (do not swim outside designated areas), box jellyfish in coastal waters during wet season (use stinger nets), and tropical sun (high SPF, hat, rashie).
