5 Best Ski Resorts Near Salzburg

Two mountains on one ticket, and the biggest vertical drop in this guide. The region totals 408 km of piste and 121 lifts. The Schmittenhohe above Zell am See holds 77 km plus 8 km of marked ski routes on 27 lifts, running from 760 m up to 2,000 m, and gains a new eight-seat Kapellenbahn chairlift for 2026/27. Across the valley, the Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel above Kaprun add 61 km on 24 lifts and climb from 768 m to 3,029 m. That is a 2,261 m vertical, more than three times Obertauern's.

The glacier is why this one opens early. Kitzsteinhorn expects glacier skiing from 10 October 2026; skiresort.com lists a longer 3 October to 23 May window, but the operator's own date is the one to plan around. The Ski ALPIN CARD, which covers the Schmittenhohe, the Kitzsteinhorn and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, starts its winter season on 27 November 2026, with main season 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027 and a bonus season through 4 April 2027. Adult day-pass rates are confirmed for 2026/27: EUR 82 from 08:00 in main season, EUR 70 if you start at 11:30, dropping to EUR 74 and EUR 63 in the winter-start and bonus seasons. Seven main-season days cost EUR 489. This is not a Ski amade resort, though it is in the Salzburg Super Ski Card network.

Access is the second best of the five. Direct trains run Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Zell am See in about 1 h 45 and go frequently, and Westbahn adds a Vienna-Salzburg-Zell am See service three times a day. The station sits in town, walkable or one short bus ride from the Schmittenhohe lifts. For the Kitzsteinhorn, stay on SVV regional bus 660 to Kaprun, roughly 20 to 25 minutes. In-resort ski buses are free with the Ski ALPIN CARD.

Pro Tip: If your train gets in late morning, buy the 11:30 Ski ALPIN CARD rather than the full day - EUR 70 instead of EUR 82 in main season. Ride bus 660 to Kaprun and spend the afternoon on the Kitzsteinhorn, where the pistes above 2,500 m hold their surface far better than the Schmittenhohe's 760 m base runs.

Four mountains, one lift pass, 123 km of piste. Planai, Hochwurzen, Hauser Kaibling and Reiteralm link up as the 4-Berge-Skischaukel: 46.4 km easy, 68.3 km intermediate and 8.3 km difficult, plus 4 km of ski routes, served by 47 lifts. The base is 728 m and the high point 2,015 m, a 1,287 m vertical that beats every other Ski amade area in this guide. Lifts run 08:15 to 16:30. Planai also hosts the floodlit night slalom on the finish pitch above the town, the one piece of World Cup theatre on this list.

The pass arithmetic here is the best trick in the guide. A one-day ticket covers Planai and Hochwurzen plus the wider Schladming-Dachstein region; buy two days or more and it automatically upgrades to a full Ski amade pass, valid across all five regions and 760 km of piste, at no extra charge. Planai has confirmed its 2026/27 rates: EUR 81.50 at the ticket office in main season, which runs 19 December 2026 to 26 March 2027, or EUR 69.50 to EUR 81.50 with online early-bird pricing. Outside those dates it is EUR 76.00 at the window and EUR 64.50 to EUR 76.00 online. The full season is expected to run 28 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, though planai.at had not confirmed those bookends when this guide was written.

One change gets you there. Train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bischofshofen, then on to Schladming, about 1 h 57 in total; the direct bus takes roughly the same 1 h 56. Schladming station is a short walk from the town centre, and the Planai City-Xpress gondola starts in the centre itself rather than at an out-of-town car park, so there is no shuttle to fold into your morning. The other three mountains are reached by free ski bus.

Pro Tip: Never buy two consecutive one-day Schladming passes. Two singles at EUR 81.50 cost EUR 163 and keep you inside Schladming-Dachstein, whereas one two-day pass covers the same two days and upgrades you to the whole Ski amade network, putting Gastein and Flachau on the same card.

No resort in this guide is easier to reach without a car. Direct trains run Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bad Gastein with no change at all, the fastest in 1 h 21 and the average around 1 h 35, and gastein.com confirms hourly direct connections from Salzburg, Vienna and Munich, roughly 18 direct services a day. Better still, Bad Gastein station has an overpass leading straight to the Stubnerkogelbahn valley station and the Felsentherme, so you step off a train and are riding a lift within minutes instead of hunting for a ski bus. Journey times are indicative rather than OBB-quoted, but the hourly frequency is not in doubt.

The valley carries over 200 km of piste across four areas. The main linked sector, Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, is 82.7 km (30.8 easy, 49.3 intermediate, 2.6 difficult) on 17 lifts, running from 860 m to 2,300 m for a 1,440 m vertical, second only to the Kitzsteinhorn here. Sportgastein adds 24 km and is the highest terrain in Ski amade; Dorfgastein-Grossarltal contributes about 70 km topping out at 2,033 m; Graukogel is left to natural snow and ski tourers. The 2026/27 season is confirmed: Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel runs 11 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 with partial operation from 27 November, 08:30 to 16:00 and closing at 15:30 until 31 January. Sportgastein runs 18 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with limited weekend service to 2 May. Dorfgastein-Grossarltal dates have not been announced.

Gastein is a Ski amade region, and one day ticket covers Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, Sportgastein and Graukogel; it sits in the Salzburg Super Ski Card network too. Price is the gap. In August 2026 both skigastein.com and gasteinertal.com were still showing 2025/26 tariffs: EUR 78.50 at the ticket office in main season (20 December 2025 to 10 April 2026), EUR 66.50 to EUR 78.50 online, and EUR 55.00 in low season. Read those as the shape of the price rather than the number you will pay, and expect 2026/27 rates around the 1 September 2026 pre-sale.

Pro Tip: Aim for a direct train that reaches Bad Gastein before 08:30, when the Stubnerkogelbahn starts turning. The station overpass puts you at the valley station in a couple of minutes, which buys a car-free first-lift start that drivers coming over the Tauern rarely manage.

Intermediates get more usable terrain here than anywhere else in this guide. Snow Space Salzburg links Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann/Alpendorf into 120 km of piste - 34 km easy, 82.1 km intermediate and only 4 km difficult, plus 5 km of ski routes - on 45 lifts. Add neighbouring Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl and Zauchensee and the same ticket reaches 210 km on 70 lifts. The base is 740 m, the top 1,980 m, a 1,240 m vertical. Flachau is Hermann Maier's home mountain, a fact the village mentions often and with some justification.

The 2026/27 season is confirmed: lifts turn on Saturday 28 November 2026 and stop on Sunday 4 April 2027, running 08:30 to 16:00 and extending to 16:15 from 1 February 2027. The 12 PEAKS Ski Connection, which stitches the region's valleys together, is expected to open on 5 December 2026. Prices are the missing piece. Snow Space Salzburg had not published 2026/27 day-pass rates as of August 2026, with ticket pre-sale opening on 1 September 2026. For reference only, the 2025/26 main-season adult day pass, covering 20 December to 10 April, was EUR 79 at the ticket office and from EUR 67 with an online early-bird. Flachau sits in the 12 Peaks / Salzburger Sportwelt region of Ski amade, so any multi-day ticket bought here reaches all 760 km, and it is in the Salzburg Super Ski Card network as well.

This is the hardest of the five to reach by public transport, at two changes. Train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bischofshofen, then on to Radstadt or Altenmarkt im Pongau, then SVV regional bus 522 for the final leg. Radstadt Bahnhof to Flachau Ortsmitte takes about 23 to 24 minutes, roughly hourly between 08:00 and 18:30, and Radstadt station is 12 km from the village. Total is around 2 h 48, again indicative rather than an OBB figure. Free ski buses then run within Flachau and between Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann in peak season.

Pro Tip: Set a reminder for 1 September 2026, when Snow Space Salzburg opens its 2026/27 pre-sale. In 2025/26 the gap between the EUR 79 ticket-office price and the EUR 67 online early-bird was EUR 12 a day, which across a six-day trip is most of a seventh day's skiing.
