Zakynthos (also called Zante) is the third-largest of Greece's Ionian Islands, lying about 20 km off the western Peloponnese coast. The Venetians who ruled the island from 1484 to 1797 nicknamed it Fioro di Levante - Flower of the East - and the floral imagery still suits the place. Dense vegetation, citrus groves, and currant vineyards cover the eastern plain, while the western half rises into a mountainous plateau ending in dramatic limestone cliffs and the highest point at Mount Vrachionas (758 m).

Most visitors come for the coastline. Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) - a turquoise cove walled by 200-metre cliffs with the rusted hull of the freighter MV Panagiotis grounded on its sand - ranks among the most photographed beaches on earth. The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, the loggerhead turtle nesting bay at Laganas (home to Greece's first National Marine Park), and quieter west-coast spots like Porto Limnionas and Keri Caves round out the natural attractions. The capital, Zakynthos Town (locals call it Chora), sits on the eastern coast and rebuilt itself in Venetian style after the 1953 Ionian earthquake levelled most of the original buildings.

The island is small enough to circle by car in a day - roughly 40 km long and 20 km wide - but rewarding enough to fill a full week. Beach season runs from May through October, with July and August the hottest and busiest. Spring and autumn bring mild weather, far fewer crowds, and most attractions still open. Zakynthos International Airport "Dionysios Solomos" (ZTH) sits 4.3 km south of the capital, served by charter flights from across northern Europe, and a ferry from Kyllini on the Greek mainland connects the main port.

Zakynthos Destination FAQ

The sweet spot is May to early June and September to mid-October. Sea temperatures stay swimmable, daytime highs hover around 22-27°C, and crowds are a fraction of peak summer. July and August deliver the warmest seas and longest days but bring the most tourists, the highest prices, and frequent 30°C+ heat. November through March is wet, mild, and quiet, with many west-coast tavernas and boat tours closed.

Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH) sits 4.3 km south of Zakynthos Town, so a taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs roughly 15 EUR (fixed-rate stand outside arrivals). KTEL public buses run to Zakynthos Town several times a day for about 1.80 EUR but stop running early evening. Most visitors pre-book a rental car at the airport - the island is best explored by car and rental desks line the small terminal.

Yes for most travellers. The KTEL bus network covers the main resort towns - Laganas, Tsilivi, Argassi, Alykes - but service to the dramatic west coast (Navagio viewpoint, Porto Limnionas, Keri Caves) is sparse to non-existent. A small rental car runs around 25-45 EUR per day in shoulder season and 50-80 EUR in peak summer. If you only plan to stay at one resort and take a couple of organised boat tours, you can manage without.

Plan four to five full days as a minimum. That gives you one day for Navagio Beach and the Blue Caves boat tour, one for the Vasilikos Peninsula and Marathonisi turtle island, one for the western beaches (Porto Limnionas, Limnionas, Keri Caves), and one for Zakynthos Town and lazy beach time. A full week lets you spread out, add a Kefalonia day trip from Agios Nikolaos port, and still relax.

Yes - Zakynthos is one of Europe's safest destinations. Violent crime is rare, and standard precautions for petty theft in busy resort areas are enough. The genuine risks are environmental: cliff edges around the Navagio viewpoint (which has had partial collapses), strong sun in July-August, and the occasional rough sea on the exposed western coast. Always swim at flagged beaches and check tour operator weather updates.

Yes. On Trip1, you can book hotels across Zakynthos and pay with over 50 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC. Trip1 covers 3 million+ hotels in 190+ countries, making it easy to find and book accommodation with crypto - from the lively beach resorts of Laganas and Tsilivi to quieter family hotels around Vasilikos and Alykes.

The east and south coasts hold every major resort. Laganas is the loud, young, party-orientated strip - a 9 km sandy beach, dense bars, and clubs. Kalamaki sits at the quieter end of the same bay. Tsilivi and Planos to the north of Zakynthos Town are family-friendly with shallow water. Argassi is closest to the capital. Vasilikos and Porto Roma occupy the southern peninsula and offer the calmest beaches and a more upscale feel. Alykes and Alikanas in the north are mid-range and laid-back.
