Krabi Travel Facts

Krabi is a province on Thailand's Andaman coast known for its dramatic limestone karsts rising straight out of turquoise water. Most travellers base themselves at Ao Nang or the boat-only Railay Peninsula, with Krabi Town itself acting more as a transit hub than a destination.

The region delivers some of the country's best rock climbing, kayaking through mangroves, and island-hopping by longtail boat to the Phi Phi, Hong, and Four Islands. Quieter alternatives like Koh Lanta, Koh Jum, and Koh Phi Phi Don are an easy ferry away, making Krabi a flexible base for both adventure and beach time.

Krabi Destination FAQ

November to April is dry season and ideal for island hopping, climbing, and snorkelling. May to October brings monsoon rains and rougher seas - some tours to Phi Phi and the outer islands still run but are weather dependent. December and January are peak.

Krabi International Airport (KBV) is about 15 km from Krabi Town and 30 km from Ao Nang. Shared airport vans to Ao Nang cost around 150-200 THB; private taxis are 800-1,000 THB. From Ao Nang, longtail boats reach Railay Beach in 10-15 minutes.

Songthaews link Krabi Town and Ao Nang for around 60 THB. Tuk-tuks and scooters cover shorter hops. Longtail boats are the standard transport for Railay, Tonsai, and the offshore islands. Day-tour speedboats depart Ao Nang for Phi Phi, Hong, and the Four Islands.

Four to five nights covers Ao Nang, a day on Railay, a Four Islands or Hong Islands tour, and a day on Phi Phi. With a full week you can also stay overnight on Phi Phi Don, or add a few nights on Koh Lanta or Koh Jum.

Krabi is generally very safe. The biggest risks are sea conditions in monsoon season - listen to local guides and avoid swimming when red flags are up - and scooter accidents. Stick to licensed boat operators for island trips.
