Kansas City Travel Facts
Kansas City straddles the border between Missouri and Kansas, and it carries a confidence that surprises first-time visitors. Famous worldwide for its barbecue - a slow-smoked tradition with its own distinct style - the city also boasts a remarkable jazz heritage, one of the largest collections of fountains of any city in the world, and a revitalised downtown that mixes 19th-century architecture with modern urban energy.
The Country Club Plaza is one of the first planned outdoor shopping districts in the world, modelled on Seville and decorated with Spanish tiles and fountains. The Crossroads Arts District draws galleries, studios, and creative businesses into a walkable neighbourhood of converted warehouses. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art holds one of the finest collections in the Midwest, with particular strength in Asian art.
Kansas City is a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city, with matches taking place at Arrowhead Stadium - home of the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team and one of the loudest stadiums in the world. Kansas City Destination FAQ
Late September through November is the most pleasant time to visit Kansas City, with warm and dry days, comfortable evenings, and the famous barbecue scene in full swing. Spring (April-May) is also lovely before the summer heat and thunderstorms arrive. Summer is hot and humid (up to 35°C) but the city's outdoor festivals and sports events are in full swing - the FIFA World Cup matches in summer 2026 will be peak energy.
There is no direct rail or light rail connection from Kansas City International Airport (MCI) to downtown. The best public transit option is RideKC Bus Route 101, which runs to downtown in about 45 minutes for $1.50. Rideshares (Uber, Lyft) are the most convenient option - the journey takes 20-30 minutes and costs $30-45. Many hotels also offer shuttle services; check when booking.
Kansas City is a car-friendly city but the downtown streetcar is free and covers the main corridor from Crown Center to the River Market. For Arrowhead Stadium - the FIFA World Cup venue - you will need a rideshare or car, as it is about 10 km from downtown with no direct transit connection. For the Country Club Plaza and Westport neighbourhoods, a rideshare is easiest. Downtown itself is walkable.
Two days is enough to hit the main highlights - a proper barbecue meal at one of the legendary pitmasters, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Country Club Plaza, and a walk through the Crossroads Arts District. Kansas City is one of the most affordable major US cities, so extending to three days for a more relaxed pace is easy on the budget. World Cup visitors combining a match with sightseeing should allow two to three days minimum.
Kansas City is considered one of the friendlier and more relaxed large cities in the US. The main tourist and entertainment areas - the Power and Light District, the Country Club Plaza, Westport, and the Crossroads - are safe and lively. Exercise normal city caution after dark in less-populated areas. The city has invested heavily in downtown revitalisation and the central areas are well-patrolled during events.
On trip1, you can book hotels across Kansas City and pay with over 50 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC. trip1 covers 3 million+ hotels in 190+ countries, making it easy to find and book accommodation with crypto.
Kansas City BBQ is not one style - it is a world unto itself. The signature is slow-smoked meats (beef brisket, pork ribs, burnt ends) slathered in a thick, sweet-and-tangy tomato-based sauce. Burnt ends - the caramelised tips of the brisket point - were essentially invented here and remain the most prized cut. The top pitmaster names to know are Joe's Kansas City, Gates Bar-B-Q, Arthur Bryant's, and Jack Stack Barbecue.
