San Francisco Travel Facts
San Francisco occupies the tip of a hilly peninsula in Northern California, wrapped by the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. It is one of the most instantly recognisable cities in the United States, defined by the burnt-orange towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, steep streets riding up and over its 40-plus hills, rattling cable cars and the fog that rolls in off the ocean. Packed into a compact 121 square kilometres, it blends Victorian 'Painted Lady' houses, a dramatic waterfront and a famously progressive, free-spirited culture.
The city is a mosaic of strong neighbourhoods, from the bustle of Chinatown - the oldest in North America - to the cafes of North Beach, the rainbow flags of the Castro and the murals of the Mission District. Tech wealth from nearby Silicon Valley has reshaped the city, yet its bohemian roots, world-class museums and a food scene spanning Mission burritos to Michelin-starred dining remain. Just offshore, the former prison island of Alcatraz is one of the most popular day trips, while the bay offers sailing, kayaking and sweeping views.
San Francisco is best explored on foot, by cable car and on the Muni and BART systems, with rideshares filling the gaps and a car more hindrance than help given the hills and parking. The weather is famously mild but changeable: cool, foggy summers, surprisingly warm and clear autumns, mild winters with some rain, and a pleasant spring. Layers are essential year-round, and the city makes an ideal base for trips to wine country, the redwoods and the wider Bay Area.

San Francisco Destination FAQ
The best time to visit San Francisco is autumn (September-November), when the famous summer fog clears and the city enjoys its warmest, sunniest weather. Spring is also pleasant, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer surprises many visitors by being cool and foggy, especially near the coast and Golden Gate Bridge, so pack layers even in July. Winters are mild but bring the year's rain. Whenever you come, San Francisco's microclimates mean temperatures can swing sharply between neighbourhoods and times of day.
From San Francisco International Airport (SFO), the easiest and most economical route downtown is the BART train, which runs directly from the airport to the city centre in about 30 minutes. Taxis and rideshares take 25-45 minutes depending on traffic and cost considerably more. Oakland International Airport (OAK) across the bay also connects to BART via a short connector train. Door-to-door shared shuttle vans are another option, cheaper than a taxi but slower with multiple stops.
You do not need a car in San Francisco, and most visitors are better off without one. The city is compact and walkable, and the Muni network of buses, metro, historic streetcars and cable cars, plus the regional BART system, covers most of what you'll want to see using a Clipper card or contactless tap. Rideshares are widely available for the steep hills. A car brings only headaches with parking, hills and break-ins, though it makes sense for day trips to wine country, the redwoods or the coast.
Three to four days is ideal for a first visit to San Francisco. That gives you time for the Golden Gate Bridge, a cable car ride, Fisherman's Wharf, an Alcatraz tour and a wander through neighbourhoods like Chinatown, North Beach and the Mission. A long weekend covers the headline sights, while a fifth day or more lets you slow down, explore Golden Gate Park and take a day trip to the wineries of Napa and Sonoma or the giant redwoods at Muir Woods.
San Francisco is generally safe for tourists, and the main visitor areas are fine to explore during the day and evening. That said, the city has visible challenges with homelessness and some neighbourhoods, notably parts of the Tenderloin and stretches of Mid-Market, are best avoided after dark. Car break-ins are common, so never leave anything visible in a vehicle. Keep your belongings secure in crowds and on transit, stay aware of your surroundings at night, and standard city common sense will serve you well.
San Francisco is a city of distinctive neighbourhoods. Fisherman's Wharf and the Embarcadero anchor the tourist-friendly waterfront, while Union Square is the downtown hub for hotels and shopping. Chinatown and adjacent North Beach offer historic streets, dim sum and Italian cafes, and the Mission District is the heart of Latino culture, murals and some of the best food in the city. The Castro is the famous LGBTQ+ district, Haight-Ashbury keeps its 1960s counterculture roots, and Pacific Heights showcases grand Victorian homes.
San Francisco's food reflects its diversity and its place on the Pacific. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with clam chowder at the wharf, a hearty Mission-style burrito, and the cracked Dungeness crab the bay is known for in season. The city claims the origins of the cioppino seafood stew and the Italian-American Hangtown fry, while Chinatown serves classic dim sum. Pair it all with Northern California wine and the region's renowned coffee and craft beer.
