Hanoi Travel Facts

Hanoi is Vietnam's capital, set on the Red River in the north of the country. Founded over a thousand years ago, it preserves a dense Old Quarter of narrow streets where each lane once specialised in a single trade - silk, silver, paper, tin - and where motorbikes, street kitchens, and morning tai chi by Hoan Kiem Lake set the daily rhythm.

The city is the cultural and political heart of Vietnam: French colonial boulevards in the Ba Dinh district, Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, and a constantly evolving street food culture from pho to bun cha. Halong Bay, Sapa, Ninh Binh, and the Perfume Pagoda all sit within a few hours by car or train.

Hanoi Destination FAQ

October and November are the best months - dry, mild, and pleasantly warm. March to April is also good, though humidity climbs. May to September brings hot, humid weather and heavy rain. December to February is cooler with grey drizzle but still walkable.

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is around 30 km north of the centre. A Grab car costs around 250,000-350,000 VND (~40-60 min). The Vietnam Airlines minibus to the city office is 50,000 VND; the public 86 bus to the old quarter is 35,000 VND.

The Old Quarter and French Quarter are best on foot. Grab Bike for short hops is the fastest way to beat the city's motorbike-heavy traffic. Grab Car is cheap and reliable for longer rides. Walking around Hoan Kiem Lake requires careful crossings - move steadily.

Two to three full days in the city covers the Old Quarter, the Ho Chi Minh complex, the Temple of Literature, and a street food tour. Most travellers add 2-3 days for Halong Bay or Ninh Binh, and 2-3 more if visiting Sapa in the far north.

Hanoi is generally safe. Petty theft and bag-snatching from motorbikes can occur in busy areas, so keep phones and bags secure. The biggest hazard is traffic - cross streets at a slow, steady pace and the motorbikes flow around you.
