Québec, QC G1R 4A1, Canada
The seat of the oldest Catholic diocese north of Mexico, founded in 1647, rebuilt after fire and shellfire more than once, and free to enter. The interior is gilded and theatrical in a way the plain stone exterior does not prepare you for, and the crypt holds four governors of New France and Bishop Francois de Laval. Visiting hours are given as 08:45 to 12:00 and 12:45 to closing, worked around services.
One correction worth making, because plenty of guides get it wrong. The basilica has the only Holy Door outside Europe, authorised by Rome in 2013, but it is sealed between jubilee years. It was closed on 8 December 2024 at the end of the diocesan jubilee, so in 2026 you can see and photograph it but not walk through it. Guided visits, the crypt and the museum are paid and need a guide-animator. This is an active parish church, so visits are curtailed around masses, funerals and weddings with no published guarantee, and crypt access involves stairs.
Pro Tip: Come at 08:45 when it opens, before the first tour group and before the midday service window closes it. Then walk 200 m to the Seminaire de Quebec courtyard next door, which is free, almost always empty and the quietest corner inside the walls.
