The best time to visit Rome is in spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October), when temperatures are mild and the city is less crowded than in peak summer. July and August are hot, often above 30°C, and many locals leave for the coast, but Rome remains busy with tourists. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with cooler weather, fewer queues at major sights, and lower hotel prices.

From Fiumicino Airport (FCO), the Leonardo Express train runs non-stop to Roma Termini in about 30 minutes and is the fastest option for most travellers. The best day trips from Rome combine ancient sites and scenic countryside, all reachable in under an hour or two. Top picks include Tivoli for Hadrian's Villa and the gardens of Villa d'Este, Ostia Antica for one of the most complete Roman archaeological sites in Italy, and the Castelli Romani hill towns for wine and lake views. Florence and Naples are both reachable in around an hour and a half by high-speed train, making them feasible long day trips as well.
