Carnival is the peak travel week of the Brazilian year and Rio is its centre, but the celebration is national: Salvador and Recife hold their own large street carnivals over the same days.
In Rio the split is between the ticketed Sambadrome parades in Cidade Nova and the free blocos across the South Zone. Flights and hotels for the week are priced accordingly and move early.
