The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg's spectacular concert hall built on top of an old warehouse, has a public viewing platform called the Plaza, which wraps around the building with panoramic views of the harbour, the Elbe and the city. In December, it is a great place to watch the lights of the port come on.
The Plaza is free to visit with a timed ticket, which can be booked online for a small fee or collected on site. The concert hall's Christmas programme includes festive concerts, which sell out well in advance.
Nearby, the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is atmospheric after dark.
Pro Tip: Book a Plaza ticket for around sunset, which is about 4pm in December, then walk through the lit-up Speicherstadt back towards the city centre.
