Québec City, QC, Canada
Start here because everything else radiates from it. The Chateau Frontenac opened in 1893 as a Canadian Pacific Railway hotel and gave Quebec City the copper-roofed silhouette that appears on every poster of the place. It is a working hotel rather than a museum, but the lobby, Bistro Le SAM, Bar 1608 and the Champlain dining room are open to non-guests, and walking in costs nothing.
One caveat that most guides get wrong in 2026: the costumed guided tour of the hotel that used to be sold to the public is not confirmed as publicly bookable this year, and the city's own tourism site describes hotel tours as available only to guests staying there. Do not build a day around it without ringing Fairmont first. What you can rely on is the exterior, the terrace frontage and a drink in the bar with a Saint Lawrence view.
Pro Tip: The classic shot is not from Place d'Armes but from the far end of Terrasse Dufferin looking back, or from the deck of the Levis ferry across the river. Both are free. For the interior, book the earliest table at Bistro Le SAM rather than paying for a tour that may not exist this season.
