Québec City, QC, Canada
Quebec's parliament sits in a Second Empire palace finished in 1886, and the National Assembly runs free 60-minute guided tours of it in French and English. Hours are Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30 and Saturday 09:30 to 16:30, closed Sundays, with closures on 12 October, 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 2 January 2026. A reservation is required, online or on site. Two other free options run from the same pavilion: a 45-minute maritime Quebec exhibition and a 60-minute tour of the library.
The 2026 caveat is significant and no guide should bury it: both debating chambers are closed. The Salon Bleu has been shut since June 2024 and remains closed until autumn 2026 for the installation and testing of technical equipment, and the Salon Rouge is closed for its own renovation. For most of 2026 the tour shows you the new reception pavilion and the corridors rather than the two rooms visitors come for. Add airport-style screening, mandatory photo ID for anyone 16 or over, a 30-minute early arrival and a compulsory coat and bag check, and there is no public parking.
Pro Tip: Check whether the Salon Bleu has reopened before you book, and if it has not, take the library tour instead, which is the better of the two while the chambers are shut. Then eat at Le Parlementaire, the Beaux-Arts parliamentary restaurant, which is open to the public and one of the city's genuine bargains.
