The official residence of the Governor General of Canada sits in 79 acres of grounds that are open daily year round, free, from 08:00 to an hour before sunset, with public art, a skating rink in winter and the ceremonial gates. The 45-minute guided tour of the residence itself covers the State rooms, the Canadian art and furniture collection and the honours exhibition, and it is also free.
Booking depends on the season and it is worth getting right. From 5 January to 3 May 2026 tours run daily 10:00 to 15:00 by reservation only. From 4 May to 30 June and again from 2 September to 30 October it is reservation only on weekdays and first come, first served at weekends. Between 1 July and 1 September 2026 no reservation is needed at all, daily 10:00 to 16:00. Requests need at least 72 hours notice outside that window. Expect metal-detector screening, and note that backpacks and video devices are not allowed inside.
The honest limitations: this is a working residence, so hours change and tours cancel for official business at short notice, and you see State rooms rather than the private apartments. There is no on-site parking at all, only free three-hour street parking in the surrounding neighbourhood. The 3.5 km walk down Sussex Drive is genuinely pleasant in September and grim in February.
Pro Tip: Come between 1 July and 1 September and skip the reservation entirely. Walk out along Sussex Drive past the National Gallery, the Prime Minister's official residence at 24 Sussex and the diplomatic quarter, which turns the journey into half the attraction rather than a commute.
