FAQs about Boutique hotels

Quick answers about boutique hotels on trip1.

A small hotel with a design and a personality of its own. The term has no legal definition and nobody polices it, which is why it gets stretched to cover everything from a riad in Marrakech to a converted farmhouse in Tuscany. In practice it means a hotel where someone made deliberate choices about the building, the rooms and the food, rather than following a brand manual.

Scale and sameness. A chain hotel is built to feel the same in Frankfurt as in Manchester, and that consistency is the product. A boutique hotel is the opposite bet: it is shaped by its building and whoever runs it, so it cannot be repeated. You trade predictability for character, and occasionally for a lift that is slower than you would like.

Often, but not always, and the two words are not the same thing. Luxury is about how much is spent on you. Boutique is about how particular the place is. A farmhouse with eight rooms and no spa can be firmly boutique and not remotely luxurious, and some of the best ones here are exactly that.

The phrase is usually credited to Steve Rubell, who in the mid-1980s described his new Morgans Hotel in New York as a small boutique standing next to the department stores, meaning the chain hotels around it. The comparison stuck and the word has been doing that job ever since.

Not automatically. In cities they often cost more than a chain of the same standard, because there are fewer rooms to spread the costs across. Outside cities it frequently flips, and a small hotel in a village can cost less than a chain in the nearest town. Rates move a lot by season, so it is worth checking the same hotel across a few dates.
