FAQs about Haunted hotels

Quick answers about haunted hotels on trip1.

There is no official ranking, but the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego is the name that comes up most. Kate Morgan checked in there in 1892 to meet a man who never arrived and was later found dead on the hotel's beach stairs. Her room, 3327, is still the hotel's most-requested.

Lists differ and none is official, but ten with well-known stories are the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, the Queen Mary in Long Beach, the Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, the Emily Morgan in San Antonio, the Driskill in Austin, the Skirvin Hilton in Oklahoma City, The Liberty in Boston, the Omni Mount Washington in New Hampshire and The Blackburn Inn in Virginia. All ten are in this collection.

The Stanley in Estes Park, Colorado. In 1974 Stephen King spent a night in Room 217, and the nightmare he had there became The Shining. In England, Ettington Park near Stratford-upon-Avon played Hill House in the 1963 film The Haunting.

There is no official ranking, but the stories told most often belong to castle hotels: Dalhousie Castle near Edinburgh and its Grey Lady, Ruthin Castle in Wales, where a Grey Lady is said to be buried outside the walls, and Lumley Castle in County Durham, which Australian cricketers fled at night in 2005. In London, The Langham's Room 333 ghost is said to appear only in October.

Hotels with a documented dark past certainly do; the ghosts are harder to prove. The Liberty in Boston really was the Charles Street Jail, where Malcolm X was held, and Q Station in Sydney really was a quarantine station where more than 500 people died. Other stories, such as Room 525 at the Driskill or the Skirvin's maid Effie, have no historical record and are best enjoyed as legend.
