Bordeaux, France
Start here, because two hours at La Cite du Vin will make every chateau visit that follows more interesting. The permanent exhibition covers world wine regions rather than only Bordeaux, and the ticket includes a multimedia guide in eight languages and, importantly, one glass of wine at the Belvedere eight floors up, chosen from a list of 15 or more. Adult admission is 23 EUR for a date-stamped ticket or 28 EUR open-dated, with under-18s at 9 EUR and a family ticket at 56 EUR.
Hours for 2026 run daily 10:00 to 19:00 from 3 April to 31 October, then 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and Sundays for the rest of the year with Saturdays to 19:00. It closes on 25 December and for a full week from 26 January to 1 February 2026, which catches out winter visitors. The honest caveat is that this is a museum: no vines, no cellar, no winemaker. If you only have one day in Bordeaux and want wine rather than context, skip to one of the four entries below.
Two additions are worth knowing about if you are building a wine week rather than a single day. The Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux, the wine school run by the regional trade body on Cours du 30 Juillet beside the tourist office, sells tasting workshops from 45 EUR for 90 minutes with a sommelier, though English-language sessions run only occasionally. And Garonne cruises leave from the city quays from 19 EUR, rising to 29 EUR for a winemaker aperitif on the water.
Pro Tip: Buy the date-stamped ticket at 23 EUR and go at 10:00 sharp, then take your Belvedere glass at around 11:30 before the terrace fills. If you plan two or more museums plus tram travel, the Bordeaux CityPass at 37 EUR for 24 hours includes La Cite du Vin with the tasting and pays for itself.
