Hamburg Christmas Markets 2026: Where the Holiday Magic Happens
Marketing Manager
The main Hamburg Christmas market, the Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt, runs from Monday 23 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, open daily from 11am to 9pm, according to the city's official tourism site. Run by the Roncalli circus company, it fills the square in front of Hamburg's grand City Hall with around 80 stalls, and its famous flying Father Christmas glides over the market on his sleigh several times a day. Entry is free.
Hamburg has dozens of Christmas markets, from the cheeky Santa Pauli on the Reeperbahn to the Winterdom funfair and the white tents on the Jungfernstieg. This guide covers the 6 best ways to enjoy a Hamburg Christmas market trip, each with the address, the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn station and a Pro Tip. Where 2026 details had not been announced, we give last year's dates and hours.
The order starts at the Rathausmarkt, moves north to the Jungfernstieg and the Alster, heads west to St. Pauli for Santa Pauli and the Winterdom, and finishes in the HafenCity at the Elbphilharmonie.
1Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt - The Flying Father Christmas

The Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt is the most famous Hamburg Christmas market, set in front of the neo-Renaissance City Hall. The 2026 market runs from 23 November to 23 December, open daily from 11am to 9pm. Organised by Roncalli, it has a strong focus on traditional crafts and sustainability, and the city says it draws nearly three million visitors a year.
The highlight is the flying Father Christmas, who soars across the market on a sleigh pulled by reindeer on a wire high above the stalls, telling a Christmas story as he goes. The market also has a historic carousel and its own organic Rathausmarkt mulled wine.
Stalls sell wooden toys, glass decorations and North German treats such as Franzbrötchen, alongside roasted almonds and gingerbread.
Pro Tip: Check the daily times of the flying Father Christmas at the market and arrive a few minutes early for a good view. Visit on a weekday afternoon to avoid the busiest evening crowds.
2Jungfernstieg and the Alster Christmas Tree - White Tents by the Water

The Christmas market on the Jungfernstieg, Hamburg's elegant promenade along the Binnenalster lake, is known for its white tents, which give it a calm, stylish atmosphere quite different from the busier Rathausmarkt. Stalls sell crafts, gifts and food with views across the water.
Every Advent, the Alstertanne, a giant illuminated Christmas tree, floats on the Binnenalster, its lights reflected in the lake. It is one of the most photographed Christmas sights in Hamburg, and a natural stop on any Hamburg Christmas market walk.
The Jungfernstieg market usually runs from late November until shortly before Christmas; check Hamburg Tourism for the 2026 dates before you go.
Pro Tip: Walk along the Jungfernstieg after dark for the best view of the floating Alstertanne. Combine it with the Rathausmarkt, which is only a three-minute walk away.
3Winter Boat Trip on the Alster - Mulled Wine on the Water

One of the most relaxing ways to see Hamburg at Christmas is a winter boat trip on the Alster lakes. Tour boats depart from the Jungfernstieg pier and cruise past the floating Christmas tree, elegant villas and the illuminated city skyline, with mulled wine, punch and gingerbread served on board.
The boats are heated, so the trip is comfortable even on cold evenings, and the views of the lit-up Inner and Outer Alster are especially beautiful after dark.
Special Christmas cruises usually run during Advent; check the Alster boat operators' websites for 2026 schedules and booking. A cruise makes a calm break between visits to the busier Hamburg Christmas market squares.
Pro Tip: Book an evening departure for the best views of the city lights and the Alstertanne. Combine the trip with a stroll through the Jungfernstieg and Rathausmarkt markets afterwards.
4Santa Pauli on the Reeperbahn - Hamburg's Cheekiest Christmas Market

Santa Pauli, on the Spielbudenplatz just off the Reeperbahn, calls itself Hamburg's naughtiest Christmas market, mixing traditional stalls with the cheeky spirit of the St. Pauli nightlife district. According to event listings, it runs from 9 November to 23 December 2026.
Opening hours for 2026 had not been announced at the time of writing. In 2025, the market opened from 4pm to 11pm on Mondays to Wednesdays, 4pm to midnight on Thursdays, 4pm to 1am on Fridays, 1pm to 1am on Saturdays and 1pm to 11pm on Sundays.
The stage hosts live music, burlesque and strip shows from Thursday to Saturday evenings, so it is aimed at adults rather than families, and the Winterdeck bar serves creative mulled wine cocktails.
Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday evening for the live music without the weekend crowds. Try one of the Winterdeck's signature hot cocktails, then explore the rest of the Reeperbahn.
5Winterdom on the Heiligengeistfeld - Hamburg's Winter Funfair

The Winterdom is the winter edition of the Hamburger Dom, northern Germany's largest funfair, held on the vast Heiligengeistfeld. The 2026 Winterdom runs from 6 November to 6 December, according to the City of Hamburg, with rides, a giant Ferris wheel, food stalls and festive lights.
It is not a traditional Christmas market, but it is a much-loved part of Hamburg's pre-Christmas season, especially with families. Stalls serve mulled wine, candied apples, roasted almonds and Fischbrötchen, the city's classic fish sandwich.
Entry to the funfair is free, while rides are paid individually. Note that the Winterdom closes on 6 December, before most Christmas markets end.
Pro Tip: Visit on a Wednesday, traditionally the family day at the Dom, when many rides offer reduced prices. Ride the Ferris wheel after dark for views over the city.
6Elbphilharmonie Plaza - Harbour Views at Christmas

The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg's spectacular concert hall built on top of an old warehouse, has a public viewing platform called the Plaza, which wraps around the building with panoramic views of the harbour, the Elbe and the city. In December, it is a great place to watch the lights of the port come on.
The Plaza is free to visit with a timed ticket, which can be booked online for a small fee or collected on site. The concert hall's Christmas programme includes festive concerts, which sell out well in advance.
Nearby, the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is atmospheric after dark.
Pro Tip: Book a Plaza ticket for around sunset, which is about 4pm in December, then walk through the lit-up Speicherstadt back towards the city centre.

The two best-known markets are in the city centre: the Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt, in front of City Hall, and the white-tented market on the Jungfernstieg beside the Binnenalster lake. Santa Pauli is on the Spielbudenplatz off the Reeperbahn, the Winterdom funfair is on the Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli, and the HafenCity market is on the Überseeboulevard near the Elbphilharmonie.
Weekday afternoons are the quietest, as the Rathausmarkt gets very busy in the evenings and at weekends. Come in late November or early December if you also want to see the Winterdom, which closes on 6 December. After dark, walk along the Jungfernstieg to see the Alstertanne, the floating Christmas tree on the Binnenalster.
The Rathausmarkt is the most famous, with its flying Father Christmas, traditional crafts and organic mulled wine. The Jungfernstieg market is calmer and more elegant, with white tents by the water. Santa Pauli is the most unusual, with burlesque shows aimed at adults, while families usually prefer the Rathausmarkt and the Winterdom funfair.
The flying Father Christmas soars over the Rathausmarkt on a reindeer sleigh hung from a wire high above the stalls, telling a Christmas story as he goes. He flies three times a day while the market is open, from 23 November to 23 December 2026. Check the daily flight times at the market and arrive a few minutes early for a good view.
The EisArena in Planten un Blomen park is Germany's largest outdoor ice rink, roughly the size of three ice hockey pitches. It usually opens in late autumn and runs until mid-March, with skate hire on site and DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays. The 2026/27 opening date had not been announced at the time of writing. The nearest U-Bahn stops are St. Pauli (U3) and Messehallen (U2).
