Pauillac, France
The Medoc is where the famous names are, and also where most of them will not let you in. Chateau Margaux takes appointments Monday to Friday but states plainly that tasting is for professionals only. Chateau Mouton Rothschild does receive visitors, but asks for two months notice and caps private tours at eight people. Chateau Lafite Rothschild has no public visit offer, and Chateau Palmer's own site still carries closure text from 2024, so contact it directly rather than trusting any guide.
Two estates are genuinely visitor-ready. Chateau Lynch-Bages in Pauillac runs a 1 hour 30 cellar tour at 25 EUR, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00, in French, English or German, with tailor-made tastings from 75 EUR. Chateau Beychevelle at Saint-Julien-Beychevelle offers The Amiral at 40 EUR for 1 hour 15 or Insider Secrets at 65 EUR privately, with hours confirmed through 31 December 2026: Monday to Saturday in summer, Monday to Friday from October. Its food pairings need seven days notice and prepayment.
Plan around two rhythms rather than one. Almost every Medoc estate opens Monday to Friday only, with Saturdays the exception and Sundays effectively closed, and all of them suspend visits during the harvest, which in 2026 began on 6 August. That combination leaves a narrow window, so fix your appointments first and build the rest of the day around them. The Margaux Medoc tourist office at Place des Commerces, 33460 Cussac-Fort-Medoc, can confirm which estates are receiving visitors that week.
Pro Tip: Book Lynch-Bages and Beychevelle for the same day, morning and afternoon, and hire a driver rather than taking a car, since the whole point of the Medoc is tasting. Confirm both appointments before you book the driver, because almost nothing in the Medoc opens on a Sunday.
