Cádiz is one of Western Europe's oldest cities, a salt-washed port set on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic in Andalusia's Costa de la Luz. Founded by the Phoenicians over three thousand years ago, it wears its history lightly — a compact old town of golden sandstone, sea-facing ramparts, and buzzing plazas surrounded by water on almost every side.

The historic centre packs in the gold-domed cathedral, watchtowers, and lively squares, while urban beaches like La Caleta and the long stretch of La Victoria sit within walking distance. The city is famous for its exuberant February carnival, its fried-fish taverns, and its role as a gateway to the sherry towns and white villages of the province.

Cádiz is walkable, sunny, and refreshingly unpolished compared with Andalusia's bigger tourist hubs. Atlantic breezes keep summers cooler than inland Seville, and the winter carnival is the year's liveliest moment.
