Fort Lauderdale is built around water. More than 500 km of canals thread through the city, earning it the Venice of America tag, and it holds one of the largest concentrations of private yachts anywhere, with the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show each autumn the biggest event of its kind in the world.
The beach runs for 11 km along a low-rise promenade that is noticeably calmer than Miami Beach, 45 minutes south. Las Olas Boulevard is the main dining and gallery street, connecting downtown to the ocean, and the water taxi is a genuinely useful way to move between them. The city has long since shed its spring-break reputation.
Fort Lauderdale is also a practical base for the wider region. Brightline trains reach Miami in about 30 minutes and West Palm Beach in 35, Everglades airboat trips leave from the western suburbs, and Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise ports on earth.
