Nuremberg is Bavaria's second-largest city and the heart of Franconia, a place where medieval grandeur and 20th-century history sit side by side. Its old town is enclosed by almost 5 km of city walls and crowned by the Imperial Castle, which looks out over red-roofed houses, Gothic churches and the busy Hauptmarkt.
Visitors explore Albrecht Dürer's House, the vast Germanisches Nationalmuseum and the half-timbered lanes around the Pegnitz river. The city also faces its darker past openly: the Documentation Centre at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Memorium Nuremberg Trials in Courtroom 600 are among Germany's most important historical sites.
Nuremberg is famous for its small grilled bratwurst, Lebkuchen gingerbread and Franconian beer, and its Christkindlesmarkt is one of the best-known Christmas markets in the world. With fast trains to Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt, it is also a great base for Bamberg, Regensburg and the Romantic Road.

May to September is the best time to visit Nuremberg for mild weather and beer gardens. Late November to Christmas Eve is when the Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt, one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets, so expect crowds and higher hotel prices. Trade fair weeks can also push rates up, so check dates before booking.
The U2 underground line is the easiest way from Nuremberg Airport to the city centre. It reaches the main station in about 13 minutes, a short walk from the old town walls. A taxi takes around 15-20 minutes.
Walking is the best way to get around Nuremberg's old town. Most sights sit inside the medieval walls, between the main station and the Imperial Castle. The U-Bahn, trams and buses reach outlying sights such as the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Courtroom 600 memorial, so you do not need a car.
Two days is enough for Nuremberg's main sights. Spend one day in the old town and castle, and another on the city's 20th-century history at the Rally Grounds documentation centre and the trials memorial. Add a third day for a trip to Bamberg.
Yes, Nuremberg is a very safe city for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare. Keep an eye on your belongings at the Christmas market and around the main station, as you would in any busy city.

Bamberg is the top day trip from Nuremberg, under an hour away by train. Its UNESCO-listed old town is famous for smoked Rauchbier. Regensburg and Würzburg are each about an hour by fast train, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the classic walled town on the Romantic Road, takes around 1.5 hours.
Nürnberger Rostbratwurst is the essential food to try in Nuremberg. These small grilled sausages come by the half-dozen with sauerkraut, or three in a bread roll as a street snack. Also try Schäufele (roast pork shoulder), Nuremberg Lebkuchen gingerbread and a local Franconian beer.
