Entering Malaysia - what you need
Malaysia is one of the simpler countries in Asia to enter, as long as you handle the arrival card before you fly. If you booked your stay on trip1, keep the booking confirmation on your phone, because immigration officers and hotel front desks both want an address in Malaysia.
- A passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with a blank page for the entry stamp.
- A completed Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, submitted online within three days of your arrival date.
- A visa or eVisa if your nationality is not on Malaysia's visa exemption list.
- Proof of onward or return travel, which airlines check more often than immigration does.
- An address for your first night in Malaysia, which your trip1 booking confirmation covers.
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card explained
The MDAC is a short online form that replaced Malaysia's paper arrival card. It is free on the official Immigration Department portal, and any site asking you to pay for it is not the real thing.
You can only submit it within 72 hours of your arrival date, so it is not a task you can tick off weeks ahead. Use the passport you will actually travel on, because a mismatch slows you down at the counter.
A few groups are exempt: Singapore citizens, Malaysian permanent residents, long-term pass holders, diplomatic and official passport holders, and travellers using recognised cross-border passes with Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia.
Important: Fill in the MDAC before you leave home. Border officers check for it on arrival, and sorting it out at the counter can cost you hours you would rather spend at your hotel.
Do you need a visa for Malaysia?
Most visitors from Western countries do not. Citizens of the US, UK, EU member states, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the Gulf states get up to 90 days visa-free for tourism.
Indian and Chinese nationals currently have a 30-day visa exemption. Malaysia has extended that arrangement more than once and it is set to run to the end of December 2026, so check the official Malaysian Immigration site close to your travel date.
Nationals of countries outside the exemption list, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and much of sub-Saharan Africa, apply for an eVisa or a visa with reference before travelling. If you are unsure which group you fall into, the Malaysian Immigration Department publishes the current list.
Checking into a hotel in Malaysia
Malaysian hotels ask every adult guest to show a passport at check-in and record the details for guest registration. Bring the physical passport, because a photo on your phone is often refused.
Your trip1 booking confirmation is what proves you have somewhere to stay, both at the immigration counter and at the front desk. A digital copy is normally fine, though saving a PDF offline helps when airport wifi is slow.
Some hotels ask for a payment card at check-in to cover incidentals such as the minibar or room service. That is the hotel's own security hold and it is separate from how you paid for the room on trip1.
