What a visa is
A visa is a decision made in advance by the country you want to visit. It says that a consular officer has looked at your documents, accepted your reason for travelling, and is willing to let you present yourself at the border.
Whether you need one depends on four things: your nationality, where you are going, how long you are staying, and why. Two people on the same flight can have completely different requirements because they hold different passports.
How a visa works, from application to arrival
- Check the rules for your nationality on the official immigration or foreign ministry website of your destination.
- Choose the right category. Tourism, business, study, work and transit each have their own conditions, documents and fees.
- Submit the application and pay the fee, then attend an appointment for biometrics or an interview if the country asks for one.
- Read the decision carefully. Check your name, passport number, validity dates and the number of entries you are allowed.
- Travel inside the validity window and show the visa at the border, where the officer admits you and records how long you may stay.
What a visa does not do
- It does not guarantee entry. A border officer can still refuse you, and that decision is theirs alone.
- It does not set your permitted stay. The stamp or digital entry record you get on arrival does that, and it is often shorter than the visa's validity.
- It does not extend your passport. If your passport expires, the visa inside it generally stops being usable.
- It does not let you work or study unless that specific category allows it.
Important: Always go by the date on your entry stamp, not the date on your visa. Overstaying by even a few days can lead to fines, deportation and a re-entry ban, and immigration systems keep that record for years.
