What you need instead of a visa
Mexico asks US tourists for a passport that is valid for the entire trip, not a visa. You also register your entry on a Forma Migratoria Multiple, the immigration form Mexico uses for visitors.
If you arrive by air, that form is the digital FMMd. You can get it from the QR code at the immigration checkpoint or the INM portal. If you arrive by land, you complete the FMME online instead.
Mexico also charges a non-resident fee for visitors. On flights it is normally built into the ticket price, and how you pay it otherwise depends on your route and how you travel, so check the current rules with INM.
