US citizens enter many countries without a visa, but Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, India, China, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia all require something arranged first.

Where US citizens still need a visa or authorisation
These are the destinations US travellers most often get caught out by. Each requirement below comes from the State Department country information page for that country.

Europe: ETIAS is expected at the end of 2026
Short visits to Europe are currently visa free for US citizens. ETIAS, the European travel authorisation, is expected to start operating at the end of 2026 and the European Commission has set the fee at EUR 20.
Once it is live, US citizens will need an approved ETIAS before travelling to participating European countries. Confirm the start date on travel-europe.europa.eu rather than trusting a third party site.
Your passport needs more validity than you think
A passport that is valid on the day you fly is not always enough. Several countries count validity from your arrival date.
- China, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Cuba each require six months of passport validity beyond your arrival date.
- New Zealand requires three months of validity beyond your planned departure date.
- Most of these countries also want one or two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
Renew early if you are anywhere near the line. An airline can refuse to board you long before the destination ever sees your passport.
Important: Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by US statute, and travelling to Cuba without an OFAC licence is illegal. You need both a Cuban tourist visa and a qualifying OFAC category, or you risk penalties and prosecution.
