Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America and offers an unusually easy combination of reef and jungle in a small space. Offshore lies the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the northern hemisphere, with the Great Blue Hole at its centre and the laid-back cayes of Ambergris and Caulker as bases. Inland, the Cayo district holds jungle lodges, cave tubing and the Maya cities of Caracol, Xunantunich and Actun Tunichil Muknal, where skeletal remains still lie where they were left.
