Šilalė is a small market town in western Lithuania and the administrative centre of Šilalė district in Tauragė County. It sits squarely in Samogitia — the Žemaitija region that holds on to its own dialect, food and blunt sense of identity — with roughly 4,600 residents living along the River Lokysta and around the pond at the centre of town.

The town itself is quiet and quickly walked. The Church of St Francis of Assisi anchors the centre, the Vladas Statkevičius Museum holds one of the better collections of Samogitian folk art and rural craft in the region, and the pond and surrounding parkland make an easy short walk. Šilalė first appears in written records in 1533 and only received town rights in 1950, so the built heritage is modest rather than monumental.

What brings travellers here is the countryside around it: the hillforts of Medvėgalis and Bilionys, wooded ridges on the edge of Varniai Regional Park, wooden churches at Upyna and Kaltinėnai, and small manor estates scattered across the district. Šilalė works best as a slow, low-cost stop on a driving route between Kaunas and the Baltic coast rather than as a standalone city break.
