Freyung, 1010 Wien, Austria
The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on Freyung square is one of the oldest Advent markets in the city, and it is smaller and calmer than the big set pieces. The stalls stand between the Schottenkirche (Scots Church) and the palace facades of Palais Harrach and Palais Kinsky, which gives it a quieter, old-town feel. In 2026 it runs from 14 November to 23 December.
The Vienna Tourist Board lists the stalls as handicrafts, toys, jewellery, leather goods, textiles and candles. For food, look for Lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread), other Christmas baking, organic products and the standard Punsch and Glühwein. Advent music is part of the programme, with brass and choir performances on many evenings.
Freyung works well as part of a walking loop through the Innere Stadt. Am Hof is two minutes away, and Stephansplatz is an easy 10-minute walk along Herrengasse and the Graben.
Pro Tip: Freyung opens a day later than the other old-town markets, on Saturday 14 November. Walk Freyung, Am Hof and Stephansplatz in that order to finish at the cathedral as it lights up.
