Tlos is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities of ancient Lycia, with settlement layers dating back to the 2nd millennium BC and mentions in Hittite tablets. The hilltop acropolis carries a Roman-era theatre, agora, bath complex and a small Ottoman fortress at the summit; the sheer cliff face below is drilled with rock-cut Lycian tombs, the grandest being the Tomb of Bellerophon with its carved relief of the hero mounted on the winged horse Pegasus. Tlos was one of the six leading cities of the Lycian League, the federation of 23 city-states that inspired Alexander Hamilton's Federalist No. 9. 2026 entry runs €3 (payable in Euros or the daily Lira equivalent, roughly 140 TRY) and the site is covered by the Museum Pass Aegean (€95, 7 days, 40+ sites). Opening hours are 08:30 to 19:00 in summer, 08:30 to 17:00 in winter. Tlos pairs naturally with the UNESCO-listed Xanthos-Letoon complex for a wider Lycian archaeology day. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes - shade is limited and the acropolis climb is steep.

Pro Tip: Visit Tlos in the morning before Saklikent in the afternoon. The ruins are exposed and cook by midday, while the gorge is coldest and most crowded from mid-morning onwards. Combine both plus lunch at Yakapark for the classic inland day.
