Operating since 1812 under chestnut trees with up to 5,000 seats, and the beer garden Munich locals name when pressed. A Mass, one litre, costs 9.00 euros as of June 2026, which is mid-range for the city and worth holding against the 14.90 to 15.90 charged in the Oktoberfest tents. It is open daily 10:00 to midnight. The garden depends on weather and season; the vaulted cellars and the converted ice house run year round.
The thing that catches every first-timer is the two-tier system. Part of the garden is self-service, where you may bring your own Brotzeit and buy only drinks, and part has table service with a full menu of pork roast, Schnitzel and vegetarian dishes. Sit in the self-service section expecting a waiter and you will wait a very long time. Read the signs before you choose a bench.
Downsides scale with the place. Five thousand seats means noise, and finding your party after a trip to the counter is a genuine problem. It is 12 minutes on foot from the station and not walkable from Marienplatz. It is also a WirtshausWiesn partner venue, so expect a crush from 19 September to 4 October 2026. The self-service counters may want cash even where the restaurant side does not, so carry notes.
Pro Tip: Arrive around 16:00 on a weekday, before the after-work wave, and take a table-service table if you want to eat properly. If you only want a beer and a pretzel, use the self-service side and bring your own cheese and radishes from the Viktualienmarkt, which is entirely permitted and halves the bill.
