Saladin began the Citadel in 1176 to defend Cairo against Crusader threats, and the fortress on Mokattam spur stayed the seat of Egyptian government for nearly 700 years. Pro Tip: The terrace below the Mosque of Muhammad Ali catches the strongest sunset light around 5 PM in winter and 6:30 PM in summer - well worth lingering for.
