Hotels near Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market

The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom on Roncalliplatz is the best-known Cologne Christmas market, set directly beneath the south side of Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 2026 market runs from 16 November to 23 December. A huge Christmas tree, said to be one of the largest in the Rhineland, stands at the centre, and a canopy of lights stretches over the stalls.

The wooden chalets sell crafts, glass ornaments, candles and toys, along with food such as Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), bratwurst and gingerbread. Glühwein comes in a collectible mug with a deposit. A stage hosts free concerts most evenings.

Köln Hauptbahnhof is only about two minutes away on foot, which makes this the easiest Christmas market in Germany to reach by train, and also one of the most crowded.

Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday before 4pm to avoid the evening crush, then return after dark for the lights. Try Reibekuchen with apple sauce, a Cologne speciality sold at several stalls.
