The Gate of Dawn is the only surviving gate of the original city wall and one of the most important religious sites in Lithuania. Above the gate sits a chapel housing the icon of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn - a 17th-century painting venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians, drawing pilgrims from across Eastern Europe. Pro Tip: Approach from outside the Old Town (south side) for the best view of the gate itself, then enter and climb the stairs to the chapel. The stretch of Ausros Vartu g. between the gate and the Church of St. Theresa is one of the most atmospheric streets in Vilnius.
