Hotels near Heinzels Wintermärchen on Heumarkt

The Heumarkt section of Heinzels Wintermärchen is the only part of the Old Town market that stays open after Christmas. In 2026 it runs from 23 November until 10 January 2027, making it the best option for anyone visiting Cologne between Christmas and Epiphany.

The highlight is the ice rink, with skating paths that wind between the stalls, and curling lanes for groups. Food and drink stalls surround the rink, and the equestrian statue of King Frederick William III stands at the centre of the square.

Heumarkt has its own tram and U-Bahn stop, so it is easy to reach, and it is a short walk from both Alter Markt and the Rhine riverside.

Pro Tip: Skate in the early evening on a weekday for the quietest sessions. If you are in Cologne after 23 December, Heumarkt and the Harbour Market are the places to go.
