Hotels near Ihlara Valley (Ihlara Vadisi)

Ihlara Valley is the outlier here and the one hike that needs a full day. The gorge runs 14 km from Ihlara village to Selime, cut 100 to 150 m deep into the plateau by the Melendiz River, and it is the only walk in the region with continuous shade and running water. It sits 85 km south-west of Göreme in Aksaray province, about 1.5 hours by road. The full traverse takes 4 to 5 hours one way; the popular short version drops the 400-odd steps at the main entrance and follows the river 4 km to Belisırma in 1 to 1.5 hours, while Ihlara village to Belisırma is about 7 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Difficulty is easy, because the riverside path is almost level and the staircase is the only real effort.

Unlike the Göreme valleys, this one is a ticketed archaeological site. The örenyeri opens at 08:30 with the ticket office closing at 18:15, and 2026 admission for foreign visitors runs around 10 to 12 euros equivalent in lira. Roughly fifteen of the valley's cave churches are open, and five are worth the detour: Ağaçaltı, Sümbüllü, Yılanlı, Kokar and Kırkdamaltı, the last of which carries a 13th-century Seljuk-era donor portrait. The route is one-way in practice, since almost nobody doubles back, so agree a pick-up at Belisırma or Selime with your driver before you start, or join a shared Green Tour minibus out of Göreme. No dolmuş runs along the canyon.

Pro Tip: Start at Ihlara village rather than the main staircase entrance if you want the best-preserved frescoes in your first hour, and eat lunch on one of the riverside platforms at Belisırma where trout is grilled over charcoal at tables set out over the water. Bring cash in lira; the ticket office and the restaurants take nothing else.
