Knez Mihailova (Prince Michael Street) is the city's main pedestrian axis, linking Republic Square with the entrance to Belgrade Fortress. The 800-metre run is protected under Serbia's cultural heritage law - almost every building along it dates from between 1870 and 1930, in a mix of academic historicism, Art Nouveau and early modernism. Highlights include the Serbian Academy of Sciences at number 35, the neo-Renaissance Hotel Balkan facade and the House of Nikola Spasic at number 33.

The street is at its best in early evening when the korzo (pre-dinner promenade) fills the pavement with families, students and buskers. Bookstores Vulkan (at the Republic Square end) and Plato (at the Kalemegdan end) both keep late hours.
