Makawao sits at 1,600 feet on the slopes of Haleakala and is the historic center of Maui's paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture, dating to the 1830s when Mexican vaqueros were brought over to train Hawaiians in cattle handling. Baldwin Avenue is a two-block stretch of false-front wooden buildings housing galleries, a saddle shop, Komoda Store & Bakery (open since 1916, famous for cream puffs and stick doughnuts, closed Wednesdays and Sundays), and the Makawao Rodeo Grounds that host the July 4th weekend Makawao Stampede.
Beyond the town, the Upcountry corridor along Highway 37 covers Kula's flower and produce farms, Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm at 4,000 feet ($3 self-guided walk, closed Tuesdays), and MauiWine at the Ulupalakua Ranch tasting room in the old jail (open daily 11am to 5pm, complimentary and paid tastings). Cooler air, jacket weather at dawn and dusk, and pastureland views make this the Maui most first-time visitors do not expect.
Pro Tip: Buy pastries at Komoda before 10am - the popular items (cream puffs, guava malasadas) sell out mid-morning, and Wednesdays and Sundays are dark days.
