Pl. d'Aligre, 75012 Paris, France
Marche d'Aligre is the market Parisians actually use, running six mornings a week in the 12th arrondissement and combining three things in one square: an open-air produce market on Place d'Aligre, the covered Marche Beauvau dating to 1779 for meat, cheese and fish, and a flea market of secondhand stalls alongside. October is peak season for what it sells, with mushrooms, squash, chestnuts, quince and the first oysters of the season arriving together.
It closes around 1.30pm and is shut on Mondays, so this is a morning entry or nothing. Prices are visibly lower than at the markets nearer the centre. Le Baron Rouge, the standing-room wine bar on Rue Theophile Roussel at the corner of the square, serves oysters and fills glasses straight from the barrel from late September onward.
Pro Tip: Arrive around 11am on a Sunday, buy produce from the outdoor stalls rather than the covered hall, then walk 10 minutes to the Coulee Verte Rene-Dumont, the elevated planted railway line running to Bastille that turns yellow through October.
