Monopoli is Polignano a Mare's quieter, more lived-in neighbour and an ideal alternative base for travellers who want the Adriatic without the day-tripper crowds. The fortified centro storico is enclosed by 16th-century Spanish walls, punctuated by the Castello Carlo V - built in 1552 by order of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V - and open Tue-Sun 09:30-13:00 and 16:00-20:00 in 2026 with a 4 EUR entrance fee.
