Westenriederstraße, Munich-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Every city list needs one place where lunch costs less than a beer at Oktoberfest, and in Munich it is this soup stall in the Viktualienmarkt. Soups, stews and curries rotate daily across Bavarian and international recipes, in single figures to the low teens in euros. Hours are Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, closed Sunday. No reservation, and the stall says so on its own site: you walk in and sit down.
It is also unusually easy to pay at, which matters in a market where individual traders are frequently cash-only. Use it as the anchor for a wider graze: the Viktualienmarkt itself opens Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 15:00, closed Sunday, and its beer garden rotates through Munich's six big breweries every five or six weeks. Bringing your own Brotzeit to that beer garden is permitted as long as you buy the drinks there.
Set expectations properly. This is a market stall, not a destination meal: seating is cramped, partly open to the weather, and there is no dinner and no Sunday service. If you arrive at 18:30 hoping for supper you will find it shut. What it does is feed you well for under 15 euros three minutes from Marienplatz, which nothing else on this list attempts.
Pro Tip: Eat here at 11:30 before the office lunch rush, then buy cheese, radishes and a pretzel from the surrounding stalls and carry them to the Augustiner-Keller self-service benches later. Two courses, two locations, and change from 25 euros for the day.
